THE MAN WHO STARTED WORLD WAR III
My UNCLE, Charles Fernley Fawcett 1915-2008 
A secret RIGHT WINGER hidden on the bosom of my family.

Charles Fernley Fawcett, rescuer, freedom fighter, actor, musician, CIA SPY, filmmaker, died at the age of 92. A handsome enough man, kindly, well meaning but strangely enough my handsome dead UNCLE is the man who started WORLD WAR III. He just couldn't stop meddling. He's the guy who got SENATOR CHARLIE WILSON to convince CONGRESS to go into AFGHANISTAN and get the RUSSIANS OUT. (He and Orson Welles did a documentary on Ruski charging thru Aghanistan to own it,  get some open southern ports, to PIPE OUT OIL to world markets.  If not a land grab --a HARBOR GRAB.  But they did it with atrocities, genocide and contempt for the Afghanis. Charlie loved and helped victims; he was always compassionate. He married 5 Jewish women in a row (one of them was my aunt Lilly,) --- married 'em just to get 'em out of NAZI GERMANY's WAY. He had one Argentinian wife, Marina Von Berg, who gave him  his only known child and no issue with his last wife, April, who lives on in London.

Born in Virginia, Raised in the Carolinas, a member of the Red Cross Ambulance corps in WWI, he went on to become the CIA WWII secret guy in Rome,and later when he lived there after the war, dubbed "The Mayor of Rome." Fawcett, an American expatriate and moral adventurer most of his life, was known for his rescue work alongside Varian Fry in Marseilles in 1940, after France fell to the Nazis. Fawcett did all sorts of odd jobs for Fry, starting out as the doorman receptionist at Fry's private American Relief Center. Decked out in his official-looking Ambulance Corps uniform, Fawcett kept order while directing the desperate refugees to the interviewers inside. His gracious manner was appreciated even when his Southern drawl made his English hard to understand. Fawcett went on to deliver messages, find hiding places, make deals with Marseilles gangsters, and helped escort refugees (like my Aunt  Lilly,) to freedom.

On his own, Fawcett also engaged in a series of five or six (*I'm hazy) bigamous and bogus marriages, done legally on paper but not in the bedroom, in order to help Jewish women get out of French internment camps and to allow all his "wives" to get out of Europe. My father's sister, Lilly, my aunt, was one of these wives. She owes her emigration to the USA to Uncle Charlie. I thought he was a great guy for years until he created WORLD WAR III just recently. (Recently I've had a reversal. Koran toting hijadists have to be removed from the planet. My tree hugger liberalism is gone.

ANYWAY, I was saying CHARLIE's back story and that of VARIAN FRY is amazingly  heroic. Jews were being rounded up and Lilly had been taken from her dressing room in a Belgian opera where  she was a soprano and put in a box car and sent to a FRENCH concentration camp. Today nobody knows FRANCE even had a detention camp but they did, used earlier for Commies. It was in the PYRENEES MOUNTAINS NEAR BORDER with SPAIN, NAMED GURS.  CLICK on <=== THAT HORROR THERE.  She had the foresight to sew diamonds into the hem of her dress, knowing beforehand that Jews were going to be taken from that opera in Belgium where she was singing.

In the camp, she gave the diamonds to a guard, said "go write my father, Dr. Alfred Szendrei and tell him I'm here." Grampa had left Germany with his wife and grand piano. There he had been the conductor for the Leipzig opera,  from 1918 thru to 1934 when he saw the Berlin burning of the books, including his dozen books on Jewish music. Post that date he and his wife lived in PARIS until SUMMER 1940 when GERMANS came. They walked from Paris to  Cassis, PROVENCE  with STUKAS flying over head shooting defectors so that they fell into ditches. Cassis was THE HEART OF VICHY FRANCE where the VICHY did not NEED GERMANS to TELL THEM to ship Jews to Auschwitz, on their OWN THE FRENCH WANTED THE JEWS GONE so in 42 they started the YELLOW STAR law and began ROUNDING UP JEWS FOR BOXCARS. Google JEWS POLICY VICHY and realize that the NAZIS did not have to tell the FRENCH what to do or how to do it.

But there in the heart of UNOCCUPIED BUT NOT SAFE PROVENCE, my grandparents somehow lived quietly summer, fall and winter until in JANUARY 1941, My Hollywood Residing Daddy got them across the ATLANTIC to NYC  where they waited out the war.  Grandpa still had a Hungarian passport, so Lilly legally  was the daughter of  an HUNGARIAN, in spite of the family living 25 yrs in Leipzig and at the end, 1933, in Berlin  & her being raised there. This gave them a legal OUT for her. She was Hungarian. The guard carried the message to Grandpa ALFRED SZENDREI  who ran to the PYRENNEES, showed his Hungarian passport (meaning Nazis had no power over him) ...and Gramps got LILLY out of  the concentration camp. Diamonds are INDEED a girl's best friend!

"I guess we were from the Promised Land," Fawcett recollected for the Varian Fry Institute's upcoming documentary "And Crown Thy Good": Varian Fry in Marseilles said. "When you'd seen what they were doing to the Jews, you couldn't help but be on their side. We were taught at school, you know, the strong protect the weak. And this is the way it's supposed to be-we are our brother's keeper, let's face it. And America was the strong  nation in those days."

At various times throughout his life, Charles Fawcett - wrestler, wartime R.A.F. pilot and Foreign Legionnaire, recipient of the French Croix de Guerre and the American Eisenhower medal, unofficial CIA spy, movie star, socialite, trumpet player, songwriter, composer, Amazon explorer, horseman, stuntman, actor, artist and ladies' man-traveled the globe to help resistance movements in Afghanistan and elsewhere. 

The documentary he and Orson Welles made would later play the KEY part in Making JOANNE HERRING astonished. She was dating a Congressman, and made her BF look at it. He was convinced, See non fiction book on it, CHARLIE WILSON's war  or see the film with JULIA ROBERTS playing Herring.. TOM HANKS as the Congressman. And this single DOCUMENTARY that Uncle Charlie and Orson Welles made has given us 40 years of WAR with MUSLIMS. 

Screen the movie "Charlie Wilson's WAR." He convinced CONGRESS and REAGAN and SENATOR LONG to covertly ENTER the MIDDLE EAST first --in AFGHANISTAN. The RUSSIANS lost that war which caused THE FALL OF COMMUNISM in  1989. Which has given us the blowback from OSAMA BIN LADEN and ISIL and IRAN and ALL OF IT, WTC 911. BLOWBACK.  It created the total dismemberment of Russia which PUTIN is still trying to put back in the bottle, --the liberation of the 13 Soviet satellite countries including the OIL RICH STANS and war-torn Ukraine. But also the blowback of going into AFGHANISTAN against the RUSSIANS gave us the CHENEY LIES which took Dumbo Dubya Bush Jr into IRAQ --and with it, an unforseen, horrific DOWNSIDE. The BLOWBACK of THE MUSLIM WORLD against us. And America in WORLD WAR III against TERROR-JIHADISTS. ALL OF THIS THANKS TO ORSON WELLS DOCUMENTARY . And UNCLE CHARLIE.

My Uncle Charlie couldn't have meant to do harm.  He loved Jews and he loved MUSLIMS. He was a close pal of King MOHAMMED and KING HASSAN ( Morocco ) who WERE FRIENDS WITH JOANNE HERRING, and that's how she met Uncle Charlie. The King gave Charlie the royal RV to travel around in. My father, Albert Sendrey, got to borrow it one summer and drove his wife and young children (from fourth wife) around Europe in it for a month solid. Perhaps Charlie's sympathies with this Moroccan King led him to understand and sympathize with the Afghanis who suffered unspeakable atrocities from Russian soldiers.

Charlie became the fickle finger of FATE's HAND when he showed his and Orson's  film to a group of the KING's CHUMS.  POPULAR Christian right winger, 6th wealthiest woman in Texas  Joanne Herring saw it, and she went to Charlie Wilson, (Mike Nichols' film tells that story, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts star..... .) and Charlie Wilson got Senator Long & Reagan to support the AFGHANIS against Russia which is where AL QAEDA STARTED as we trained and paid OSAMA BIN LADEN. He was OUR TERRORIST FIRST. Just as HO CHI MINH had been our boy in ASIA. We fund these warlords then wonder oh my why did they turn on us? This whole crazy Afghani war would change the balance of power and history itself. And all this Uncle Charlie  did on one lung, which was all he had after WWII.

Born in 1915 to an old Virginia family (Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are part of the family tree), Fawcett was raised by relatives in Greenville, South Carolina, when his parents died when he was a child. After high school, where he was a star athlete, he left Greenville and worked as a wrestler. He made his way to Paris in 1937, and was mostly an expatriate from then on. Fawcett studied art and worked as an artists' model, trying his hand at sculpture and continuing to wrestle.

At the outset of World War II, Fawcett joined a unit of American
volunteers in the French Ambulance Corps. After the fall of France to
the Nazis, he found himself in Marseille, where he met Varian Fry, a New
York intellectual who had just arrived on a private mission to try to
get prominent anti-Nazis and Jews out of France.

Fry and his staff-which also included fellow Americans Miriam Davenport,
Mary Jayne Gold and Leon Ball-ultimately were involved in helping to
rescue some 2,000 people, many of them among the luminaries of the time:
Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Jacques Lipchitz, Heinrich Mann, Franz Werfel,
Alma Mahler Werfel, André Breton, Victor Serge, André Masson, Lion
Feuchtwanger, Konrad Heiden, Hannah Arendt... The list-Fry's list-goes
on and on, Fry becoming in 1996 the first American singled out to be
honored as a Righteous Among the Nations by Israel's Yad Vashem, the
Jerusalem memorial to the Holocaust.

"The American consulate in Marseille didn't like us very much," Fawcett
recalled, understating the case. "This horrible doorman was given
instructions not to let refugees in-and he really meant it. A friend and
I took him around the corner one day and worked him over. I had a
wrestling hold on him, and when we got around the corner, three or four
of the refugees had followed us and were watching. From then on, he was
much nicer."

Warned that he was about to be arrested, Fawcett managed to leave
France, carrying secret messages in one of his sculptures and in the
third valve of his trumpet ("Nobody ever took you seriously if you had a
trumpet with you").

He joined the RAF in England as a flyer, then served in the French
Foreign Legion. After the war, he drifted into acting, a profession he
thoroughly enjoyed: "For a short while you could be what you wanted to
be." A handsome man with a booming voice, Fawcett performed in over one
hundred films, sometimes as the villain, working with stars such as
Errol Flynn, Alan Ladd, and Robert Taylor. Living in Rome in the 1950s,
the man-about town developed a local reputation in the press as the
"Mayor of Via Veneto," escorting such beautiful stars as girlfriend Hedy
Lamarr.

Always vulnerable to a good cause and the battle for human rights, a
swashbuckling figure off-screen as well as on, Fawcett helped Hungarians
escape their country after the Soviet invasion in 1956. Especially close
to his heart was the Afghan cause after the Soviet Union invaded the
country in 1979.

In the recent motion picture Charlie Wilson's War, Charlie Wilson (Tom
Hanks) is invited by Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) to a party to see a
documentary about the Afghanistan resistance made by a friend of hers.
The unnamed friend is Fawcett, and the documentary was Courage Is Their
Weapon, narrated by his friend Orson Welles. Since Fawcett was known to
friends as Charlie, this was also Charlie Fawcett's War. He turned Joanne
on to the Afghans fighting off Ruski and got US INVOLVED.

Fawcett served repeatedly with the mujahideen in Afghanistan- there
exists a photograph of him in full regalia- and he used it to lobby Herring and
Wilson to support the rebels. According to the book on which the movie
is based, Wilson "was entranced by Fawcett, whom he considered a
Renaissance romantic. 'How could I say no to a guy like that?'"

After marrying British model agency executive April Ducksbury after a
long relationship (a prior relationship which  had produced a daughter,
he married Marina von Berg of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Fawcett settled with his wife in a
house in the Chelsea area of London, regularly traveling to various
capitals to visit his many friends, as well as writing his memoirs.
Fawcett also nurtured a passion for songwriting, his wistful, melodic
tunes harkening back to a bygone era.

In 2006 in Cardiff, Fawcett was honored at the annual British Holocaust
commemoration in the presence of Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has
expressed his condolences to Mrs. Fawcett, calling Fawcett "an
extraordinary and brave man." "It was an honour to have met him at the
Holocaust Memorial in Cardiff," Blair went on, "and I know he will be
missed by his many friends and family." Fawcett has also been nominated
alongside other Fry colleagues for recognition as Righteous Among the
Nations.

During Fawcett's upcoming final screen appearance in And Crown Thy Good,
Pierre Sauvage's feature documentary about the Varian Fry mission,
Fawcett bristled at the notion that people then didn't realize the
plight the European Jews were in. "I think people knew more than they
pretended. People close their eyes to what they don't want to see."

"Don't get old," Fawcett had whispered to Sauvage during a visit, as
Fawcett found himself struggling with encroaching infirmities. Just
before his death, he had been reading a book of poems, Healing Light, by
friend Alexandra de Borchgrave. Wife of the famous right wing CIA SPY Arnaud DB
and major player in the INNER CIRCLE of the OCTUPUS. Fawcett had underscored
a  few words:  "With a heart full of thanks that I've done my best."

At his memorial service on February 18, 2008, in London, friend and Varian Fry and

biographer Andy Marino eloquently stressed the fearlessness and modesty
of the man. "Though he could blow a trumpet just fine," Marina said, "he
never blew his own trumpet." Fawcett certainly would have taken it in
stride that the American press, although alerted, has not to date
acknowledged the passing of this remarkable and colorful American.Who
through his persistence getting USA INTO AFGHANISTAN for 20 yrs
may have inadvertently given us the WAR against MUSLIMS. All the same

On February 20, 2008, on a lovely gray day, Charles Fernley Fawcett's ashes
were scattered into the Seine.
