After those two geniuses, all economics has been little more than a matter of arguing Marx (although, if you’re Libertarian, you ignore the German wunderkind and go pre-Ricardo or perhaps straight to Burke), with special attention paid to the still-lingering enigma of ‘value’, which the Austrian School (Carl Menger et al) developed around.
And then there's the modern "Chicago School", a conservo propaganda machine full of oligarch licking Keynesian economists who added the truly bogus "trickle down theory" to the language, telling us that if the rich got richer, we pauves would benefit. HA!) --a group which strove to crush everything Marx scribed.
However, like Jefferson knew about the Constitution, Karl Marx knew there were things he himself hadn’t nailed down, but sick and poor, he left the task for posterity. As it turned out, posterity needn’t have worried, as Marx’s pals soon took the task up. Leon Trotsky, a man so venomously reviled by the Right that you just know there’s *gotta* be something great about him, came up with an ingenious extension of Papa Karl’s theorizing. Back in the first years of the 20th century, Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was already analyzing how and why the urgent demands of Russian workers and peasants for bread, land and peace were not attainable under capitalism. In what came to be known as the theory of permanent revolution, a term first used by Karl Marx, Trotsky explained that the only way to realize essential demands such as these was through a socialist revolution led by workers and supported by other oppressed people.
Trotsky later generalized his theory, applying the ideas of permanent revolution to understand not only less developed countries like Russia, but advanced industrial nations as well. In the quest to gain fundamental rights and meet basic needs, he said, workers and activists would find that the only solution is to make "deep inroads into the rights of bourgeois property. The democratic revolution grows over directly into the socialist revolution and thereby becomes a permanent revolution."
*Freedom Socialist*, Vol. 28, No. 1 and “Why has no anticapitalist revolution been fully completed? What holds the working class back? Trotsky believed a major factor to be the treachery of its own opportunist leadership, the middle caste.
“In 1982, in a political resolution written for the Freedom Socialist Party, Murry Weiss, Sam Deaderick, and Clara Fraser expand[ed] on Trotsky's analysis about the nature of this misleadership, and how it retards, derails, and deflects workers' revolt. Entitled ‘The Precarious '80s, Crisis and Opportunity,’ their work provides invaluable insight for activists today. Below are excerpts[:]
“Trotsky used the phrase ‘middle caste’ in *The History of the Russian Revolution* to describe the social stratum which seized and held power between the February 1917 revolution and the October 1917 Bolshevik victory. This caste, he wrote, was a ‘petty bourgeois partition-wall between the revolutionary masses and the capitalist bourgeoisie.’...
“The middle caste diffuses, derails, and when pressured, violently combats any substantive confrontation between capital and labor. This caste claims to represent labor or women or gays or people of color or war resisters or consumers, but actually acts as a transmission belt that carries the interests and ideology of the ruling class back into the very mass movements it pretends to lead. “The maintenance of peaceful coexistence is the middle caste's business, all the way from international politics to the shop floor. The middle caste is not a class; it does not have a precise relationship to the means of production. The term describes a social layer whose members may span class lines but who play an identical political role: pacification of the class struggle. Its interests and program are petty bourgeois, middleclass, not proletarian.
“In fact, the equilibrium between the ruling class and the middle caste is the critical social glue which has maintained capitalist rule long after capitalism as a system has become outdated and retrogressive. But for middle-caste treachery and betrayal, world revolution would have long since triumphed.
“The class interest of the bourgeoisie lies in its need to subdue, defeat, and exploit the working class for profit...In the USA, the middle caste is that vast and obnoxious layer of opportunist professionals, technocrats, labor bureaucrats, mass movement reformist leaders, and slightly left-of-center politicians...They channel the radical impulses of others into reformist directions. They foster the illusion that humane capitalism is a possibility, that we can reform our way to equality and utopia. Their function is to conciliate and compromise, make deals and keep the peace.
“U.S. capitalism faces a working class growing, by necessity, more militant. Inflation, unemployment, speed-up, and loss of benefits proceed apace, and racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism are on the rise. The traditionally high-paid aristocrats of labor are themselves facing the specter of layoff and contract concessions. And as the working class turns to militant struggle tactics for sheer survival, the labor bureaucracy is forced into left-sounding phrases to prevent real labor radicals from gaining adherents and leadership...The old equilibriums are crumbling. Direct, naked, and unmediated class confrontations are on the new agenda.
“The traditional mechanism of equilibrium between the rulers and the middle
caste is the Democratic Party. There the bourgeoisie, reformists,
bureaucrats, and social-patriot social democrats run an ugly game on the
U.S. working class. But the game is being recognized in wider and wider
circles as a con game...Labor's face is changing color and changing gender,
and as it does, labor sees more clearly into the sham and shuck of the
ruling class and the middle caste.”Though they don't *quite* say it, Weiss et al are accusing the Dem Party of
being a PsyOp device, an entire Mohawk Valley machine. They’re right. Last
month (Feb. 27), in Dissident Voice, Eric Paton wrote of it (again well
truncated by me):“To a Marxist, class relations spring entirely from ownership
relations. There are people who own General Motors. These people are
capitalists. There are people who work at General Motors. These people are
workers. But who runs General Motors, day-to-day? Not the capitalists. There
aren’t enough of them to go around. And certainly not the workers...“By conceptual definition, the coordinator class is that group of people who
do not own the means of production, but who run the means of production
on behalf of the owners. The owners can’t run it all themselves, and they’re
certainly not going to hand power over to the workers. So they hire people
to run it for them. These people...are usually intelligent, though it is not
entirely uncommon for them to be less intelligent than they perceive
themselves to be.“Coordinators generally have a high degree of control over their own work
lives, as well as over the work lives of many others. Coordinators do
largely conceptual work that is highly empowering and makes them quite
valuable to the organization. They generally receive above-average
remuneration. Members of this class can be found in virtually any
resource-handling organization you can even think of. And in organizations
that aren’t scraping by or continually on life-support, the presence of the
coordinator class is a 100% certainty.“Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this class, at least from my own
experience, is its inability to see itself as a class. Workers have no
trouble understanding they are (virtually totally disempowered) workers.
And capitalists have no trouble understanding they are capitalists. But the
coordinator class exhibits a seemingly religious, almost-fundamentalist
refusal to identify itself as a separate class in the economy. It’s like men
who refuse to see their male privilege, or whites who refuse to see their
white privilege. Coordinators exhibit this same refusal to see their class
privilege.“Why are coordinators, like many whites or many men, so unable to see
themselves as a privileged element in society, while capitalists have no
trouble seeing themselves as privileged? Capitalists comprise roughly 1% of
the population - certainly not more than 2%. Relative to the other 99% of
society, they have gargantuan wealth and power. Only a capitalist whose IQ
was smaller than his class’s percentage of the population could fail to be
aware of this...“So why should it be any great surprise that the coordinator class - roughly
20% of the population, and while privileged, certainly not privileged on the
scale of the top 1% - can’t see its class privileges?...True working-class
liberation can never be attained until existence of the coordinator class is
recognized and addressed.”And he’s quite correct as well. The best prison is the one you think is
paradise, and the best camouflage for the prison guards is to hide in plain
sight. The Democratic Party, my friends, is the “middle caste”, the
“coordinator class”, and no gaggle of puppets has shown it better than Nancy
Pelosi and the ‘Congressional Drama Club of 2006’, now desperately
struggling to cover the over-obvious fact.In the 60s, though not addressing politicians *directly*, Richard Ney called
such people “specialists”, taking the term straight from the floor of the
New York Stock Exchange, and he laid out the game far more nakedly than
Trotsky could have. His book, *The Wall Street Jungle*, is still an
unheralded paradigm for our way of life.
