How to Root Ivy Cuttings
Ivy starts quickly and easily from stem cuttings. But many plants that exist can be started with this procedure with the variation of not being bagged and left indoors -- They can be in flats in BRIGHT SHADE outdoors or in pots. I use yogurt containers with hole punched in bottom with a red hot paring knife . Ivy is so strong and coarse that it won't ROT inside a bag. But I use bright shade under fruit trees and tables.
True ivies (Hedera spp.) include the well-known and most commonly available English (H. helix) and Algerian, or Canary Island (H. canariensis), varieties. Easy to care for as indoor potted specimens, ivies serve double duty as efficient, attractive ground covers. English ivy is evergreen in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 9, while Algerian ivy thrives in zones 6 through 10. These agreeable plants root readily from stem cuttings. While you can take cuttings year round, you will achieve the best results by taking them while the parent pant is actively growing.
Take a 4- to 6-inch-long stem tip cutting from a healthy, mature ivy plant with a clean, sharp knife. Make a smooth, clean cut about 1/4 inch below a leaf node. Remove all the leaves from the bottom 1 1/2 inch of the cut stem. Immerse the cut end into a drinking glass with about 1/2 inch of warm water.
Combine equal parts perlite and vermiculite or coarse sand to create a rooting medium. Fill a 3-inch pot with the material and set it aside. Dissolve an aspirin tablet in 1 gallon of warm water if you want to make an effective rooting compound. Fill a shallow container with the aspirin water. Set the pot of rooting medium in the water until the surface of the soil feels moist to your touch. Remove the pot from the water and allow it to drain freely for about 10 to 20 minutes.
Remove the ivy cutting from the glass of water. Dip the wet cut end of the stem in powdered cinnamon to kill any bacteria or fungal organisms that may be present, if you wish.
Poke a 1-inch-deep hole in the soil with a pencil. Plant the ivy cutting in the hole and firm the soil gently around the stem. Close the cutting up in a clear plastic bag. Poke a few holes in the bag with a toothpick to allow good air circulation.
Set the pot in a warm, brightly lit room out of direct sunlight. Warm soil promotes optimum cutting success, with a temperature between 65 and 75 F being best. The top of your refrigerator or above a hot water heater are good spots for warming the soil. Your ivy cutting will root in about 10 to 14 days.
Open the plastic bag each day to monitor the soil moisture. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Keep it evenly moist but not soggy or wet. Spritz the soil gently with water if it begins to feel dry.
Tug gently on the ivy cutting after two weeks to check for rooting. If it pulls up easily, replant it and try again in a week. If the cutting resists your pull, rooting is successful. YOU ARE GOOD!
Discard the plastic bag when the cutting roots. Keep it in the warm, brightly lit room. Water the ivy cutting just enough to keep the soil evenly moist to prevent it from drying out. Step the young ivy plant up to a 4-inch pot of potting soil when new growth emerges in about four to six weeks.

*Aspirin contains the same active ingredient, salicylic acid, that is present in the wood of all members of the willow family (Salix). Willow water is an excellent natural, organic rooting compound.
Plant multiple rooted ivy cuttings in the same pot to start an attractive vining basket that will be full and bushy. For a 4-inch pot, use up to 10 plants. You can use as many as 25 for a 6-inch pot and up to 50 in an 8-inch pot. Space the plants evenly apart.
Ivies also root easily in water. Remove the leaves from the lower 3 inches of a 6-inch ivy cutting. Add 2 inches of water to a glass. Submerge the cut stem end and set it near a bright windowsill yet out of direct sunlight in a warm room. Maintain the original water level and change the water every two or three days. Your ivy cutting will root within a week or two. Plant it in potting soil when roots are about 1/4 inch long.
