DO PAPIER MACHE that everybody wants AND GET THAT flat, GREEN PAPER that YOU WANT!

PAPIER MACHE can be lucrative because it takes so little cash to start a huge business.  No rent, you create a workshop in your garage. No problem getting ideas, use GOOGLE IMAGES where I got the masks below. When you're making money hand over foot, expand. To mass produce, do what Ford and GM do, train villagers in foreign countries , pay them a fiver a day and import the finished goods from other countries.

You can find any village an hour out of any foreign capital, Kenya, Tanzania, just far enough away from the madding crowd to be happy with 5$ a day salary. Face it, they have very little resources acessible to the natives in these foreign countries. But everyone there has children's tempera paint, varnish, flour, glue and newspapers. When you think in terms of making  artisanry objects in starving countries do consider businesses predicated on trash paper. And taking advantage of their naive, folk art painting abilities. 

NEXT, location, location, location. Are you near the Philippines? That might be where you want your second workshop, (after your garage works for a few years.). The entire west side of the USA faces the 28,000 islands of the Philippines yet pays that labor force virtually no attention! Our minds reach as far as Hawaii and stop. We could gain much from the labor force in this inexpensive paradise. The problem may be that FEW of these Filipinos speak English so you'd have to play charades  to instruct them, or sketch, draw the designs carefully then take them through every step of the sloppy newspaper, the glue, the forms, molds, visually. You may just want to pay for an interpreter/guide which you'll probably need anyway if you are going to travel an hour out of Manila. Don't forget, there are thousands of other islands there and most have ports and can ship product to you on boats, if YOUR city in USA has a port.(It is the cheapest way to ship).

Now, if you live near our SOUTHERN BORDER, you're near Mexico. Most of us speak adequate Spanish so that's a terrific place to locate your work force and 'taller' they call it, your studio. It could be that enough recessionary, poor Americans will have crossed the border to make an English speaking work force possible for you but right now, all of us speak enough 'maid spanish' to make our design suggestions intelligible to our workers. The work comes by train, and NAFTA has made it incur no tariffs. WHOOPIE!

LEARN TO MAKE MOLDS for three dimensional items, boxes, masques. Wall statuary. MOLDS allow you to make wall sculptures  mirrors of all sizes and on the coffee table, three dimensional  glowing lacquered BOXES. Currently some exquisite ones come in from asia, beautiful ones, inexpensive, too. RUSSIA has a fabulous and famous box. Some are a thousand dollars a piece. Copy this type of design in the same glowing colors, but leave off the Russian words. Just make it a villager in the forest. Not Russian. 
Women love Boxes to tuck gloves in, earrings, sentimental objects like eyeglasses, rings, theatre tickets, old corsages. Boxes are a great item. The Russian box shown here might be just five inches long. That size is five hundred dollars. Bigger ones get more expensive fast! They are made of real wood, not papiermache. They're Lacquered with gem like colors that stand out against black backgrounds.

Also, you can make what GOES INTO THE BOX. Jewelry comes to mind. Elegant, hair ornaments. Just GOOGLE "HAIR ORNAMENTS" on the IMAGE page Google offers.

The list is endless. Dolls for adults to hang on their wall, puppets, kachina doll designs, just a lively statement of our favorite totem. Mine would be the HANG IN THEIR KITTY CAT famed icon, you know paws stretching upward as its claws just hold a branch. The paper mache part is hands and face, feet. Rest is fabric and stuffing. Or a big cat sitting down proudly ready to perch on a shelf looking out over the room.

FIND gems, light chips of mirrors, put them on papier mache hair ornaments, (like the fluttering chandelier earring type things that hang off a comb, which GEISHAs wear in their wigs. GOOGLE "HAIR ORNAMENTS" on IMAGES/GOOGLE you'll see some fabulous designs. LIGHT WEIGHT PAPIER MACHE is easier on the EARLOBES, TOO! Make costume jewelry and interesting bead necklaces, using ethnic designs.   Make jeweled boxes using real gems. http://www.masterjules.net/gems.htm  American semi precious gems are affordable but quite ritzy. Imagine a big shiny chunk of chalcedony. Get ROCK AND GEM mag, get lots of small, cheap, flashy items, even big glass rhinestones, mount them on colorful bases made of paper mache.

And keep an eye peeled for blanks are objects that have no finish, cigar boxes,  hangable squares, for images ... boxes, bracelet blanks, inch wide wrist bangles. also there's newspaper, it can be made into papier mache.. I used to do it,  great results. wood salad bowls, all kinds of things can get covered. in MEXICO it was easy to get carved wood bowls, paddles, rolling pins of wood, all kinds of things. will hit garage sales near me looking for  'blank' wood things. I gessoed thick STRING, cording, made circles let it dry, added gems. 99c store has a bag of glass cabuchons, big ones, for  99c. Aquarium crystals I guess. Made great Xmas tree ornaments.

HOW DO WE START? Easily, alone at home, or with your team helping you.  In your own garage workshop. A heater, tables, lots of glue. What other BUSINESS can start off with just a stack of newspapers and some elmer's glue?

1.) HIT THE STREETS. SHOW THE STUFF OFF!  Bring in the best pieces. Show many in 8 x 10 photos printed on your PC's PRINTER. Get some order books printed up at stationers, then hit the highway. Success is mainly putting your feet on the street. Take sample to dept stores, boutiques, get orders on them.

2.) INUNDATE CRAIGS LIST and EBAY with your website's URL. The internet is THE WAY.  SELL your necklaces, Godboxes, your SUNS and MIRROR FRAMESat EBAY.com and get good prices.  The lady who runs the yummy fudge business does a huge business on EBAY.

3.) WOO THE REPORTERS - Sidle into the Daily COURIER's office at lunch time with a box of burgers and a tray full of your treasures. Show them the high concept items. The fact that you turned a garage and some newspaper into a booming business,  just little you, by yourself, may be fascinating to housewives stuck at home, or readers stuck in all day, boring jobs. Or college grads who need inspiration now that the big factories closed, moved to Mexico. Now women have time to craft. You will get newspaper coverage if you keep an inspiring tone. And you'll get buyers out of it.

4.) GET A WEBSITE with a CATCHY NAME! Dive right in and design your own. Beginners can. READ up on WEBTECH. Do you have a pal who does websites? He/she would know how to do the website of your dreams.. My designer pal Sri Mad only charged l00$ to do a website in the 90's, same price today. He will help you sign up to get your domain name.They're free at powweb.com and the site is 4$ a month. Google search terms and find a lower priced annual fee for a website if you can and get back to me.
