SHADOWS AND FOG and how your familycan escape having that CONDITION in your HEADS!
GOOD PARENTS share political flicks with the babies! Anyone out there brooding on the need for activists to educate the public against the permanent war economy of USA... maybe by calling in at those radio talk shows? Writing editorials? Blogging? YEAH all good but what about educating our own children? Parents handpicking the films their kids watch would be a great idea. Then, Mum, Dad watches these videos/ dvds with them. Runs a little instructive narrative. This would be a super important part of any family Cultural or political Enquiry. As a mother of four, I know that children have this natural rebellion thing. They don't want to sit with parents to watch anything heavy. They don't seem to want to accept parents as think-gurus. They instinctively fend off 'thought police.' But if one could channel rebellion toward the truly evil parent, the Gov which taxes us, penalizes to make wars on 3rd world countries to pirate oil and minerals for the transnationals...who don't get taxed just donate to political candidates... if we could get them angry at that whole process, maybe we could create the family flick-watching tradition with a flippergibbit pop movie like MARS ATTACKS on the first night, gook it up with popcorn, sodas, make it a regular, accepted family tradition.Then, slowly one could start to show kids films of substance, that are relevant. Socially relevant films might reach into the darkest works of art about the POWER STRUCTURE. The SYSTEM. There's a definite POST KAFKA design motif to a film I was just watching SHADOWS AND FOG --the Woody Allen movie, about pre-Nazi Germany very allied to any of Kafka's many coded metaphoric novels, w. descriptions of repressive pre-fascist European life..... and to see where else one could go for a double header, maybe rent 1984 with Burton and John Hurt. Or Woody's THE FRONT about the McCarthy hearings.I remember as a child that exposed to intense and intelligent movies, I 'GOT' nothing. I didn't have the sensibilities,I was too blank slate. My grandparents had escaped Germany in the 30's, escaped Paris in 1949 the day the Germans came in but never had said one word to me in my entire childhood
But with a parent in the room putting it on pause and explaining the full horror... maybe I could have been an activist earlier, sown my wild oats in the Vietnam movement instead of marrying a foreigner, having 4 children, getting a gun put to my head so that I drove back to America and lost 3 1/2 decades of time supporting four children as a single mother. I'd have preferred the jolly occupation of OCCUPY ACTIVISM to that family mishigas but hey, we do not decide our destiny when we're passionate and stupid and young and dumb and on top of it uneducated cuz all MY PARENTS showed me was MARY POPPINS and Sorcerer's Apprentice and Danny Kaye movies.
So show those films on Saturday nite, then maybe Sunday nite, a jocular side inquiry into facism via 1984 or the comedy version BRAZIL --which is post Kafkaesque combined with Monty Python. 1984 with John Hurt and Burton. "Air America" "Adventures of Remo Williams" "TRADING PLACES' and the HONORABLE GENTLEMAN both with Eddie Murphy. WALL STREET. LIST OF GREAT POLITICAL FILMS. Great healthy movie watching. Air popped corn with real butter--- for body health too. (Nutrit yeast recipe amazing)
The point is to sharpen a.) our kids' sense of art lineages, Kafka, Orwell, b.) our sensitivity to coded references in movies or literature as a necessary part of art. Why? Cuz the Thought Nazis could destroy you. No fun being the WHITE ROSE SOCIETY! There is repression.

FAMILY MOVIE watching as part of parents teaching kids about reality could/should be attempted. Ya think most parents actually do not WANT their kids to have leftist sensibilities? That it's like a florid tendency toward being gay or being an artist which breaks out in society and while we love to see its florid spots on another, we don't want it on our own kids? Then we are allowing them to be trusting sheep led to slaughter. Eating candies in Hell said PABLO NERUDA, the Chilean poet. Ignorant. Trusting a college degree will get them a job in maybe that OFFICE in BRAZIL. But it doesn't and they're flipping burgers or if they're lucky, creating a cottage industry as janitors CLEANING that office. Do we fear education? What are we doing that we're too busy on weekend nites to educate our kids with selected flick flippin?
