The Legendary Tirade of Louis T. McFadden
Congressman Louis T. McFadden was a member of the House of REPRESENTATIVES in the twenties and thirties. He is one of the heroes of the Federal Reserve conspiracy theorists. A Republican from Canton, Pennsylvania, he was the chair of the House Banking and Currency Committee during the twenties, but was merely a Committee member by 1932. He used his position in Congress occasionally to crusade against the Federal Reserve; a stance Gary Kah (1991) implies may have cost McFadden his life.
On June 10, 1932 the House was debating a bill which would ultimately create the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Association. The FHLMA would be permitted to issue bonds to help finance its operations, and the House was debating whether to permit the Federal Reserve to purchase some of these bonds as collateral when issuing currency. McFadden used this opportunity to launch a twenty-five minute tirade against the Federal Reserve. Here I present excerpts from his speech with my comments (the entire text may be found in the Congressional Record, pages 12595-12603).
"Mr. Chairman, we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks. The Federal Reserve Board, a Government board, has cheated the Government of the United States out of enough money to pay the national debt.
"The depredations and the iniquities of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks acting together have cost this country enough money to pay the national debt several times over. This evil institution has impoverished and ruined the people of the United States; has bankrupted itself, and has practically bankrupted our Government. It has done this through defects of the law under which it operates, through the maladministration of that law by the Federal Reserve Board and through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures that control it (C.R. p. 12595).
In this table we see that from 1914 to 1931 the Federal Reserve System collectively earned profits totaling $607 million. About $102 million was distributed to member banks as dividends, and about $147 million was paid to the Treasury as a "franchise tax." The Federal Reserve banks kept the remaining $359 million. The national debt in 1932 was $19.5 billion, so even if the Federal Reserve had been paying all itsOnce the hyperbole and histrionics are deducted, there is little remaining of substance in the above quotation. However, McFadden does make the claim that the Federal Reserve had to that point cost the federal government enough money to "pay the national debt several times over." Let’s see if McFadden is correct. Profits to the government during this time, it would have been enough to pay only 3 percent of the national debt—a far cry from McFadden’s "several times over." Moreover, the Federal Reserve’s total revenues were $971 million, so if the entirety of the System’s revenues went straight to the Treasury, it still would not have been sufficient to make McFadden’s claim even remotely accurate.
McFadden then covers a wide variety of topics related to the Federal Reserve Board. He accused it of assisting Trotsky’s efforts during the Russian Revolution, of being controlled by international bankers, of debasing the currency, and of many other fascinating transgressions. Unfortunately, he also invoked the testimony of Father Charles E. Coughlin, the Catholic priest who would later become famous for his radio broadcasts in support of Hitler’s National Socialist agenda. (!)
We can study the accuracy of these claims, as well. The first one is new to me, and I have not the slightest idea whether it is true, although given that McFadden had trouble with a claim, which could be easily verified, it seems wise to invoke skepticism on his more fantastic accusations. The second is false, as I showed in another essay.
Your homework is to GOOGLE for details. The claim that the FRB debased the currency is also false. To "debase" a currency means to reduce its purchasing power, which happens when the general level of prices in the economy rises over time. This is usually caused by excessive growth of the money supply. Yet, the price level in 1932 was lower than it was in 1914, indicating that the opposite of a Debasement had occurred.
McFadden also made some important and accurate arguments. During his speech on the House floor, he stated, "From the Atlantic to the Pacific our country has been ravaged and laid waste by the evil practices of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks and the interests which control them This is an era of economic misery and for the conditions that caused that misery, the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks are fully liable (C.R. pp. 12596-97).What did McFadden mean by "economic misery?" This was the very worst time of the Great Depression. The unemployment rate was approaching 25 percent of the labor force, which to this day stands as record for the U.S. economy. Homelessness,
Deprivation, and starvation, usually reserved for the ultra-poor in this country, was now stalking millions of former members of the middle class. "Economic misery" was an understatement. Most economic historians would agree with McFadden that the policies of the FRB during this period were the primary cause of the Depression. A mild recession in the summer of 1929 turned into a banking panic after the stock market crash in October of that year. Banks, who owned stocks and made loans to customers for the purpose of acquiring stocks, suddenly found a large portion of their assets nearly worthless as a result of the crash. Many of them began to fail, taking with them the deposits of millions of families (at the time there was no deposit insurance).
This sort of thing had happened many times before, but the Federal Reserve was created in 1913 in part to mitigate its effects as the banking system’s "lender of last resort." In the midst of the first severe wave of bank failures in 1930, the FRB voted 4-3 not to interfere with the crisis. Several more waves of bank failures followed and the Depression was well underway. Thus, the Depression can reasonably be blamed on the erroneous policies of the Federal Reserve Board. See Friedman and Schwartz, A Monetary History of the United States for a detailed account of this event.
In my view, however, McFadden goes too far in terming the FRB’s policies as "evil" or its intentions deliberate. As Friedman and Schwartz showed, the FRB essentially made an honest mistake, although a hideously costly one. Moreover, the margin of the vote was only one. In addition, there is absolutely no evidence that the Federal Reserve intended to create the Great Depression, allegedly to enable the international bankers to swoop in on the U.S. economy and buy it up at fabulously reduced prices. Nor would such intent make any sense from the Fed’s point of view. The Great Depression created an unstable Economic and political environment.
Why would the Fed intentionally create such a climate that would seriously Endanger its very existence? Finally, after McFadden’s twenty-five minutes of ranting had expired, Mr. Strong of Kansas commented on the oratory he had just heard: There is a disease that afflicts mankind, which is very vicious. It warps the judgement, it narrows the vision, and it even causes men to see red, to make mountains out of molehills. This disease has sometimes been referred to as B.A. Ladies may refer to it as "tummy" ache, but out in the wide-open spaces men call it the "belly" ache, and I know of no man of my acquaintance that has this disease in so violent a form as the gentleman from Pennsylvania, Mr. McFadden. I have not the time to refer to the many charges he makes against the Federal Reserve system, but I call attention to the fact that for 12 years he has been the chairman of the Banking and Currency Committee of this House and did not see fit during that time to remedy and of the evils of which he now complains. It seems to me entirely out of place to wait until he is retired as chairman of that great committee and then assault all of the institutions of which it has control (C.R. p. 12603). THE DEPOPULATION AGENDA

15 years of research…the subject is depopulation.
A third of Africa to go under in the first long phase, which is underway
now. AIDS and other diseases will be the COVER STORY for the decimation.
The real causes will be starvation, contaminated water (which has existed
for a long time), toxic vaccines given to people
who are already
immune-suppressed, wars, and of course,
stolen farmland.
Many reports of rural villages disappearing…this will be laid at the
doorstep of AIDS. It already is. This is a cover story. This is a lie.
HIV, as detailed in my past stories (keyword search my archive), causes
nothing. It is basically a dormant retrovirus,
like many others of its
class. Its “amazingly intricate” activity in the body is a made-up
piece
of non-science.
The day after my 1988 book, AIDS
INC., hit the shelves, a copy was
on its
way out of California to Moscow in a diplomatic pouch. It was sent
by an
agent of the USSR who was operating under diplomatic cover here.
This fact was relayed to me by one of my major sources for the book.
He
said, “Won’t they be surprised when they actually read it.”
What he meant was, the Russians at the time were fronting the theory,
developed by East German biologist, Jakob Segal, that HIV was a lethal
germ engineered in Maryland. A biowar US creation.
My book instead proved that HIV---wherever it came from---was a harmless
retrovirus that was being used as a cover story to explain/conceal
an
emerging depopulation operation in the Third World. HIV was also a
cover
for other agendas outside the Third World.
As long as AIDS is the target of W.H.Org/UN “humanitarian” efforts,
the
actual causes---which are easily reversible---of death in Africa, Asia,
and Latin America are allowed to remain and fester and expand.
Thabo Mbeki, the president of South Africa, has been a major thorn in
the
side of the depopulationists. He knows that HIV does not cause human
disease. He knows that the front-line drugs for AIDS, especially AZT,
attack the bone marrow, where certain cells of the immune system are
manufactured. Thus CREATING what is called AIDS through pharmaceutical
means. In particular, giving AZT to pregnant mothers is a major goal
of
the depopulation effort.
Mbeki understands that the causes of death in the Third World I have
mentioned above are killing Africa. However, he continues to ask for
outside help to alleviate these ravages. There is no chance he will
get
this help. ZERO.
Mbeki is being contained, to a degree, in his attempts to form a real
coalition of leaders all over the African continent. MONEY is the weapon
being used against him. Payoffs, “aid” dollars, and so on.
Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier and other retrovirologists were
languishing at the end of the 1970s at the National Cancer Institute
and
the Pasteur Institute, respectively. They had just finished their work
on
the doomed Viral Cancer Project, which was a failed attempt to show
that
cancer was caused by one or more viruses---in particular, a newly
discovered class of germs called retroviruses. These scientists had
cut
their teeth on these somewhat exotic but unimportant germs. That was
what
they knew. They were fishing around for a new disease that could bring
them government dollars.
They were SET UP to become the new tigers who would get major research
money to explore an emerging phenomenon called AIDS.
HIV was, in their hands, destined to become the COVER STORY for death
that actually was occurring for MULTIPLE REASONS.
So Montagnier and Gallo did “discover” HIV and the rest is
history---false history.
I apprised the East German biologist Jakob Segal, via mail, that his
theory about HIV was way off base. In the sense that it was not causing
human disease. If it was indeed a biowar creation, it was a failure.
Either my letter was intercepted, or he ignored it because he had his
own
agenda. He had answered a previous letter of mine which had asked direct
questions about his work---but when I blew the whistle, he fell silent.
Meanwhile, I had interested author and environmentalist Jeremy Rifkin
in
HIV. For a time---before I discovered the truth---I was exploring the
possibility that HIV had been put together from bovine and sheep
viruses---and Rifkin was very hot on the bovine factor---because there
was a chance that HIV or some bovine germ close to it was in smallpox
vaccine. If so, it potentially implicated the vaccine in millions of
deaths in the Third World.
But then I dug deeper. I found out that NOTHING strange or exotic needed
to be in the vaccine. All by itself it could kill people. Particularly
those whose immune systems were suppressed already. And then I examined
very closely the medical evidence that had been advanced by Gallo and
others to prove that HIV was the cause of what was being called AIDS.
I
realized, in 1987, that this evidence was non-existent.
I pointed out these two discoveries to Rifkin. He was not pleased. I
think he felt a little betrayed, because I had been feeding him much
different information before I saw the deeper truth. And Rifkin was
basically pointing himself toward a theory that irresponsible medical
germ machination itself was implicated in AIDS. He felt that tinkering
with germs in labs was where the real action was. I told him the Plot
was
more insidious than that, and HIV was really a cover story for the
depopulation agenda. He soon abandoned his AIDS project.
During this period (1987-88), I met a member of the secret service of
one
of the African nations “most afflicted with AIDS.” This man was basically
loyal to his people, and he felt that a gigantic hoax was being
perpetrated. At some risk to himself, he spoke to me about various
doctors who had come to his family and told them that AIDS research
was
being done in order to prove that so-called Slim Disease---at that
time
the African label for AIDS---was the result of HIV. These doctors were
amazed that such obviously false research was being accepted. In
particular, they cited Lancet, the famous British medical journal,
as the
publisher of some of this research.
I then did my own examination of a key paper by Serwadda which attempted
to establish Slim as a new and emerging phenomenon on the African
continent. The paper was so full of unsupported statements, so rife
with
omissions, that I concluded Slim was basically a diversionary label
for:
starvation, dirty water, stolen land, and immunosuppressive vaccines.
At bottom, why all this false science? Because someone needed a cover
story to conceal a persistent and intentionally unsolved situation
in
Africa that was causing death according to a plan to depopulate the
continent.

If you might consider my neighborhood a typical Gallup poll, and extrapolate from what my California neighbors foresee, my polls indicate that 75% of the western world believes that WWIII will engulf us, Break the bank, Terrorists will blow up all our landmarks and the current system is going to collapse. Catastrophically.
I live in a Mexican ghetto to the north of Hell-a. My neighbors, many of them descendants of Mayans, tell me their legends say all calendars down there only went to 2012. What did they know we don't?
To the north of me by five blocks is Cal State Northridge University where intellectuals, astronomers and scientists see the end coming with the return of Planet Niburu which will rip through our solar system in 2019 and no Spielberg or Ronnie Reagan StarWars to save us.
The Christian Religious singing in churches around me see End Times, Armageddon, the Ascension predicted when Babylon falls and Israel destroys the whole world. Well, heck that's here now!
My hippie poet, wannabe screenwriter, artist pals from L.A. predict the coming of Mad Max the Postman with all their screenplays featuring alternately a frozen future and global warming that turns Canada into the tropical zone.
Polling my pals, it would seem that the giant fickle finger of fate has written THE END into modern urban legend and it's just around the corner and ordinary folks polled on my street corner can see what's coming better than the NYTIMES. Just for starters:
GLOBAL Depression which makes the 30's look like Life of the Rich and Famous." This decade and a half long 'recession' has deepened a tad, maybe it's even outlasted the seven bad years of Pharaoh, but perhaps it’s just a correction, a much needed stagflationary period. This bottomless black hole since the late 80's isn't the thirties redux, is it? The one that culminated in and was ended by the all-time WPA program, WWII?
Another neighbor tells me "CEOs are bandits; they lie, steal, embezzle from the company, pump up the stock value with lies; there are no more earnings for people who invest in companies, it’s just sheeple being ripped off of shekels by shylocks." Oh, that's good. I nod. Smiling. Pencil scribbling.
My college ecologists pal makes his hands into a church. "Global warming, ozone depletion, algae depletion in ocean due to toxic seas, simultaneous deforestation (both of these causing a total lack of oxygen, hence plantary suffocation escalating cancer stats cuz where oxygen isn't, cancer IS). " I nod, scribbling. "Jacques Cousteau said no matter what we did now, the sea was already a dead duck." Hmmm. I intone. Isn’t it odd that the word eau is in his surname? What are the chances?
My friend the painter said the lack of water was next. The Planet will become a desert like the Sahara which before the French colonial peanut farming was a fragrant green land. " I make a note to research colonial agricultural practices of the Gauls at Google. "By 2025 demand for water will be 50% greater than the global fresh water supply." I stare. You mean water isn’t endless? Like subterranean lakes? And all that Snow? The ecologist shakes his head and sighs mournfully. "SAND, think Sand." I note that for an amateur futurist, it's odd my last name is Sands.
So right away I gotta check with my real expert. The vitamin clerk at the healthfood store told me not to worry about any of it; a tidal wave of cancer was going to finish us first. Heavy metals in the air and on the surfaces of all plants we eat. "FARMERS don’t know their job. They're adding petroleum pesticides to the food, switching the genes of the plant to make it unlike life itself. Then what they do to the ground itself with chemical fertilizers? Worst, And then we nuke it to eat it ! Our collective ignorance and hindsight will be bring the end of life. 25% loss of global topsoil in the last 50 years, the damage to food sources with pervasive pesticide pollution, even in the flesh of all animals we eat, along with huge amts of anti-biotics we shoot in our meat (as the animals fed fat-producing abnormal diets become targets for plagues, ) an exponentially growing human population, the eve of the 6 billionth child being born and 2 billion of those people dependent on industrially created nitrogen fertilizers for their food. That’s a cliff cantilevered out over a precipice that everybody is blithely walking on." Wow. I go. Wow and I stumble out of the healthfood store bottles anti-oxidants and Vit C and liver purifiers like angelica in bags which I go home to consume with Britta water cuz what's coming out of the faucet is recycled from sewage.
My neighbor AnaMaria has trained for a dozen different lines of work and is still jobless. All of my latino barrio seems to know firsthand about JOB depletion. The world will have to create 30 million jobs per year for the next 50 years to employ the growing population and just isn't doing so as people can't afford the expensive toys being made and are simply putting new heads on old gaskets and using their old heaps. But that isn't the reason some of my neighbors all ride bicycles to work. It's because the DMV wants a few hundred a year for fees and demands you spend a thousand a year insurance per car! A family of four will pay 4k a year just for insurance. DMV fees bring to nearly 5k. And the whole family has entry level jobs flipping burgers at McDonalds or cleaning houses as maids. What do they eat on? Or do they eat top ramen? If so, who'll pay for their gargantuan health care?
I take my car to the mechanic for gaskets and hear that there's oil production peak scheduled for about 2005 and a rumor we won't be able to drive those old cars with their old gaskets after that cutoff point. No gas, no wheels! And my mechanic offers me a great Kawasaki he just got in payment for some gaskets he put in.
I go to the Chinese fish market and shocked at what mackerel costs. I learn from Wang that the loss of all ocean fisheries is imminent. Every one of the seven seas has been ruthlessly overfished by those trawling barges with freezer holds, the size of modern cities that stop in port twice a year to dump. I ask Wang where all his fish comes from. Every bit from Korea, he smiles. Hmmmm Does chinese tea make teeth that shade of ochre? Or is it three week old mackerel.
Home to eat. I fry the mackerel in sliced onions, as it's a very dark flavored fish. While it cooks, I scan the headlines of the local valley paper. As they were the major proponent of the valley secession from the City of L.A., they offered me a year subscription for the same price a month used to cost! They lost the vote last November but I'm making them stick to their agreement.
I stare at front page genocides, three stories on one front page. Israelis in their streets, tourists in Bali, Jewish vacation hotels in Kenya. I wonder at the increasing number of genocidal civil wars in third world countries where a Muslim underclass achieves getback targeting tourism sites.
I remember all the third world incursionism since my activist days in CISPES in places like Timor, Rwanda, Indonesia, Mexico, Guatemala, where US trained and sponsored government death squads who killed entire villages under the rubric of fighting guerillas, but really done so the beaner soldiers could sell the oil rich land to U.S. Oil companies when they finally arrived.
In Timor a third of the population was murdered in a change of rulers. Same as today in Iraq. After the U.N. soldiers leave, a U.S. supported 'monkey' shows up, (always called a POPULARLY SUPPORTED candidate but 'taint so ) Some little U.S. ass kissing creep ascends the throne ---seemingly just released from some dungeon where the former regime had him and the legend they create for him has such drama. So OKAY, we got plague, war, military puppets ---that was just ONE hand.
On the other five fingers, there are still the plagues. Mad Cow disease in the meat supply, collapsed immune systems in modern city dwellers, chronic fatigue in teens requiring crack or Starbucks medication. A cancer pandemic, killer flus, crib death, a generation of oldsters going with Alzheimers, and babies with Attention deficit syndrome, Autism, leukemia, brain tumors, asthma, allergies most of that from forced vaccinations. Death by vaccination. Whoops! Not enough fingers on that hand!
Then, the AIDS thing, 2 million dead in USA, 20 million infected with AIDS in Africa, a million children there orphaned, (many of them with the disease). Everywhere in the world, there's a a 20 year drop in life expectancy stats due to AIDS. Oddly, there’s a similar drop in life expectancy in Russia without AIDS. Probably the diet of vodka. Maybe the lack of a religion offering HOPE since Marxism dropped off the map.
Then, did I forget, the antibiotic resistant bacterial strains to all kinds of diseases, tuberculosis, veneral diseases and this after scarcely 75 years of using penicillin. You'd think bacteria would be less canny. They're damn Muslim terrorists using boxcutters to get the man.
Then, the rapidly expanding underclass in all the "advanced" countries, many illegal immigrants, their wily crime waves, fearless bank robberies, identity theft. Triple the jail population of other, saner days.
Subliminally, Joe average Citizen takes note of every detail of the changing landscape, even apprehending in his botttomfeeder way, the wildly speculative economy on the macrocosm, the global scale mayhem in the boardrooms with an overvalued stock market bringing the world economy to the brink of a major, planetary depression with endemic joblessness and much of this aggravated by this whole ENRON MCI business showing us what fragility have the constructs that man has created for himself. They are so divorced from the old marketplace where you could examine the fish, smell it and pay for it with coppers.
We have traded the fresh smelling fish for a "faith and trust system" rendered increasing brittle by white collar crime. While we list, we must include moving the factory away from union workers to the site where slaves live in the third world, as a kind of corporate crime. CEO's who remove the human factor in the name of "productivity" and "competitiveness" are no better than muggers!
Then we get the prophecy of Karl Marx that mega-mergers would consolidate power in fewer and fewer hands. Which inevitably would become more wilful, self interested ergo corrupt, making an already brittle system even more so.
Last but not least, the muscular hand of an invisible, central Stepfather bank, (the IMF) squeezing every starving third world child into productivity to pay off loan debt with slave labor at below bottom market, non-union salaries. Throw in a dash of child labor. And hey, a few first world countries, doing the same damn thing.
Every one we know owes our soul to the company store! And there's no tenure or pension safety. No health care. No soybeans growing on our fences so we could at least make tofu. We're all a paycheck away from homelessness and utter famine. The day our credit card won't pay for the cans of beans, we sure have no beans in no garden!
Every one of these "problems" has to be considered serious. Together they will be devastating. If the wave crests, --what am I saying....if the trough deepens and persists, life in the average racially mixed city could become hazardous. People need to have prepared ---with alternatives.
We are in the position of having to create a global "emergency preparedness plan". And failing that, what's your family's plan? Do they have a vacation cottage 50 miles from a population center with an orchard, outhouse and clean, uncontaminated water source? A solar generator? Some grain, beans, some seed? Some fruit, nut orchards already up? NO? WHY NOT? Cuz you were spending on toys? New Car payments? Not hearing the waterfall up ahead?
Gad! We are feckless, fearless or like Cleopatra, in denial! It's real easy to slip into habitually not listening to warnings, to inner voices, while we persist in comfortable habit! Are we like ostriches with heads in the ground. Aren’t higher life forms supposed to be intuitive? Instinctual? Anticipate? Learn from history? Educate themselves? Think clearly?
I sigh sadly. How can we do any of that when we have to ride a bicycle twenty miles to college, or to clean someone's house all day for 40$, or when we eat a pesticide loaded banana and nuke a prefab Madcow burger and breathe ozone laden air? Who can function with things as they are? So let Hell happen. As the Spanish say, 'que mas da?' Would a hefty third world revolt be possible with the energy levels we have here? True, in some countries, people who have nothing to live for usually find causes to die for, but we seem to live in a lala land of perpetual spring. Well, maybe a colder spring than usual but still a spring.
At least that's what it seems like when I poll the people in my little
palm studded valley to the north of Hell-A.

The Loss of the Space Shuttle Was
No Disaster

Space Doesn't Belong to the NASA Mafia

The loss of seven astronaut's lives is a real loss, though no different
from
the loss of any other seven human beings. But the statistically inevitable
crash of a NASA Space Shuttle does not delay hominid migration into
the
Solar System by one day. In fact, it brings the days of real commercial
space operations closer.
The Space Shuttle did not give humanity more access to space. To launch
a
kilogram into orbit on a Space Shuttle costs on the order of $25,000.
In
1967, a Saturn V could carry a kilogram into orbit for $19,000 (and
carry
125 tons at one time instead of 29). Today, Boeing will sell you a
launch on
an ex-Soviet missile for $1,000/kilogram from its Sea Launch platform:

only effect of the Shuttle program was to
increase the cost of US government space operations. Historically,
the
Shuttle will be remembered, if at all, as a dead end like the
government-subsidized rigid airships of the 1920s.
The Shuttle Is Irrelevant
Soon there will be no NASA Shuttles. The oldest Shuttle is eighteen
years
old, and of course the design dates from the 1970s. NASA has no plans
to
build new Shuttles, or to replace them with newer designs. As John
Cserep of
the Space Frontier Foundation points out:
"NASA's unbroken string of cancelled vehicle programs stretches back
to the
Reagan Administration's X-30 NASP, and continued with the X-33, X-34,
X-38,
2GRLV and, most recently, the Space Launch Initiative or SLI. The two
remaining "X-vehicle" programs - the X-37 and X-43 - are both well
behind
schedule and over budget, making their cancellation likely."
So NASA's "plan" is to continue on as it has since 1972. It plans to
continue to subsidize Boeing, other politically connected companies,
and the
Russian kleptocracy to the tune of fifteen billion dollars per year.
without
ever building another manned spacecraft. The three remaining ancient
Shuttles, with the help of Russian Soyuz and Progress capsules, will
suffice
to maintain a toy space station with four passengers. An occasional
camera-carrying probe launched on 1960s Titan missiles will send pictures
from Mars, Jupiter's moons, or possibly the planet Photoshop. NASA's
program
is that Man will stay in the cradle forever.
NASA Is Irrelevant
Fortunately NASA is not in charge of the whole nursery. While everyone
likes
to complain about the US Imperial hegemony (including me; it's fun!),
the
truth is that the US has no veto over any nations with nuclear weapons.
That
is why the "Axis of Evil" consists only of three backward nations with
no
real military power. While Bush and Blair pretend that they are co-Caesars
over a prostrate world, the truth is that Russia, China, India, the
EU, and
even Israel can do whatever they want.
China will launch its first manned mission this year. Anyone with the
money
can buy a ticket from the Russians. French, Indians and Israeli governments
have their own satellites too. And if Third World government bureaucracies
can do something, anyone can.
Competition for economic and political power will inevitably force first
one
and then another nation to allow its citizens extraterrestrial private
property rights. The 20th century was pretty depressing and dull, but
the
21st century is going to be the most interesting in history. While
the media
obsesses over Middle Eastern Crusades and Jihads, the race for Solar
System
real estate has begun. No one in 2100 will care who nuked Jerusalem
or
Medina, but the first hominid to bring an asteroid safely to Earth
orbit
will be remembered as long as digital files are copied.
Bush Is Irrelevant
Bush may well announce new NASA subsidies to try to boost "national
prestige" (i.e., his prestige). He's already submitted a 500-billion-dollar
budget deficit (NOT 300 billion; don't forget Social Security!), so
why
would another twenty billion matter? But today's NASA is so bureaucratically
paralyzed that it is literally incapable of action. And even if NASA
could
repeal Parkinson's Law and build another 20 Shuttles, they would still
cost
ten times more to operate than 1970s ex-Soviet technology, let alone
21st
century technology. And they would still explode far too often for
routine
passenger travel.
The ISS Is Irrelevant
NASA plans to pay the Russians vast sums of money to maintain four
uncomfortable prisoners in the International Tin Can (ISS). This has
nothing
to do with space science, or with space travel. Commercial space stations
will serve as hubs, providing terminals for transfer between high-thrust,
low-efficiency ground-to-orbit shuttles and low-thrust, high-efficiency
nuclear ships for trips farther out. Commercial stations will also
provide
hangars for repair of spacecraft. Unlike the ISS, commercial stations
will
be made out of former Earth-threatening asteroids, and they will be
big. And
cheap. And safe (everyone on the ISS will die if they are hit by a
big Solar
flare).
Rockets Are Irrelevant
One reason that free-market space travel "ain't rocket science" is
that it
will make less and less use of rockets. Commercially produced rockets
could
lower a ticket to orbit into the 100 dollars per kilogram range, but
other
technologies may make a trip to a hub space station cost less than
a ticket
to Australia. Starting from the ground, various systems will replace
the
rockets of the first stage. Supersonic (but short-range) jet aircraft,
electric catapults, gas guns, even the traditional captive "rocket
sled",
can replace expensive rocket engines. Mountain real estate near the
Equator

>From the top down, graphite, buckytube, or other high-strength cables
will
turn orbital flight into an elevator ride. To oversimplify the concept,
a
space station in an orbit a few thousand miles up lowers a cable to
low
orbit. As high orbits are slower than low orbits, the velocity required
to
catch the cable is less than that required to reach orbit (in fact,
a cable
lowered from geosynchronous orbit doesn't move relative to the ground
at
all). Slowly but surely profit-driven space transportation markets
will
squeeze the rockets from both ends. ultimately, routine orbital flight
won't

Platinum Asteroids Are ....Very
Relevant
John Lewis' two books, Space Resources and Mining The Sky, catalog
a few of
the known exploitable "mineral deposits" of our system. Solar System
"geography" is taught no better than other geography; US public-school
students have no more idea of the location of the Apollo-Amor asteroids
than
of the location of Pyongyang or Kabul. Anyone who wants to understand
the
power struggles of the next decade needs to read Lewis' books, but
I'll
summarize a couple of points of Solar System "geography":
1. Some asteroids are energetically "closer" than the Moon. In terms
of
velocity needed to reach them and/or capture them, some asteroids are
only a
couple hundred miles an hour away from an Earth-orbit-bound course.
Asteroids range from pure metal types richer than any Earth-surface
ore
(Earth ores are oxidized, metal asteroids are just metal. with more
platinum
than any Earth ore), to carbonaceous chondrites rich in water and carbon.
2. All the gas giants (Jupiter-Neptune) are rich in Helium-3, a fusion
fuel
that can be reacted with tritium to produce energy but no lethal neutrons.
Of course we still know only a trivial fraction of the value of space
resources. But even the little we know shows that space industries
will make
fortunes that dwarf Bill Gates' by orders of magnitude.
The Solar System Will Be Assimilated
Just as the European powers found that relatively free-market colonies
in
the Americas were ultimately more important than squabbles over ownership
of
serfs in the Old Country, the most important territorial issue of our
new
century is the extension of private property into space. Only nations
which
accept the reality that NASA's Soviet-style "Space Program" can't
economically develop space can participate. If Americans are going
to have
any part of the new wealth, several steps are necessary:
1. Eliminate the regulatory barriers to American space companies operating
from equatorial bases (e.g. the likes of Beal Aerospace, Boeing Sea
Launch,
etc.). This means no more "export controls" against American-made
satellite-launch rockets on their way to equatorial launch sites, and
no
more import controls on American companies buying ex-Soviet missiles
and
commercializing them (fewer foreign nuclear missiles is a GOOD thing,
right,
Mr. Bush?).
2. Set up a private property-rights regime in space. This means allowing
private homesteading of extraterrestrial property of all kinds: asteroids,
planetary surface, orbital slots, etc. Those who mix their labor with
the
soil of Mars own it.
3. Contract out US government space transportation needs at fixed prices
per
kilogram. This will allow companies to profit from building their own
launch
systems their own way. There is no more reason for NASA to be in the
launch
business than for the Food Stamp program to be in the vegetable business.
If
NASA wants to go somewhere in the Solar System, they can buy a ticket
like
anyone else.
4. Stop giving NASA 15 billion per year to subsidize the Russian mafia,
Boeing mafia, etc.
5. Sell the three remaining Shuttles . if anyone can get liability insurance
on them.

pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.
Why did "they" use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools
that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.
Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?
Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would
break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's
the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads?
Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and
England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts in the roads?
Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had
to
match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots
were
made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel
spacing.
The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is
derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war
chariot.
And bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a spec and told we have always done
it
that way and wonder what horse's ass came up with that, you may be
exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just
wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses.
Now the twist to the story...
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two
big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These
are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at
their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have
preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped
by
train from the factory to the launch site.
The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in
the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel
is
slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as
you
now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.
So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's
most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand
years ago by the width of a Horse's ass.

BOSTON (UPI) -- A lawsuit filed in federal court in Boston Thursday
seeks to prevent President Bush from going to war against Iraq without
congressional approval.
A coalition including six House members, several U.S. soldiers and
parents of servicemen claims only Congress has that power under the
Constitution.
"We have a message for President Bush today. Read the Constitution,"
John Bonifaz, the plaintiffs' lead attorney, said at a news conference
announcing the suit.
"A war against Iraq without a congressional declaration of war will
be
illegal and unconstitutional," he said. "It is time for the courts
to
intervene."
The representatives joining the
suit, all Democrats, are John Conyers
of Michigan, Dennis Kucinich of
Ohio, James McDermott of Washington,
Jose Serrano of New York, Sheila
Jackson Lee of Texas and Jesse Jackson
Jr. of Illinois.
The U.S. Attorney's office said it had no comment on the suit.
The plaintiffs asked for a preliminary injunction against the president
and for a hearing on their request that Bush be barred from launching
a
military invasion against Iraq without a congressional declaration
of
war.
The lawsuit cites Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, which
reads: "Congress shall have power... (to) declare war."
The suit argues the resolution on Iraq that Congress passed in October
did not declare war and unlawfully ceded the decision to Bush.
The suit contends the framers of the Constitution sought to ensure that
U.S. presidents would not have the power of European monarchs of the
past to wage war.
"The Founding Fathers did not establish an imperial presidency with
war-making power," Conyers said. "The Constitution clearly reserves
that for Congress."
"The president is not a king," said Charles Richardson, a plaintiff
whose Marine son is stationed in the Persian Gulf.
"If he wants to launch a military invasion against Iraq, he must first
seek a declaration of war from the United States Congress. Our
Constitution demands nothing less," Richardson said.
Richardson and two other plaintiffs -- Nancy Lessin and Jeffrey
McKenzie -- are co-founders of Military Families Speak Out, an
organization of people opposed to war against Iraq and who have family
in the military.
"A full and complete congressional discussion of the issues and all
options must precede any move towards war," Lessin said, "because of
the irreparable harm that would result."
At the news conference, Lessin said she worried about her son, Joe,
a
Marine stationed in the Gulf.
"We worry about Joe," she said. "We don't want him to be wounded or
die. We don't want him to be forced to wound or kill innocent Iraqi
civilians. That would kill part of him and part of us."
