WHEN YOU ARE SITTING ON YOUR WORST ENEMY! IBS SYNDROME, the HOLISTIC CURE 

IBS is an irritable bowel. A bothered gut. The IBS Syndrome involves cramping, a repeated need to go to the john, a feeling that you didn't fully evacuate, inability to sit and type (ergo make a living!) The distinguishing symptoms are described well at MANY SITES ---GOOGLE  around for them,  see if any of that's what you have.

For some it's diaharrea, but for me it was accompanied by slight tendency toward an unusual constipation. This whole business started directly after a bout with a  salmonella bug given by a single meal of slightly undercooked chicken meat. Afterwards, my gut did not return to normal. I googled some iinfo on curing IBS holistically, from  researcher Carolyn Chambers Clark, who when asked "What self-care measures have been shown to help IBS? answered:

Eat 5-10 fruits and vegetables daily, brown rice, peanuts, dried beans and peas to increase your fiber intake. So if the meal is scrambled eggs and bacon, add watercress or romaine leaves.

*Use psyllium powder daily to regulate bowel movements (health food item; follow directions on label). METAMUCIL unflavored is psyllium.

*Avoid alcohol and tobacco, carrageenan seaweed thickener which is in most over the counter foods, candies made by commercial sources. Read LABELS! EMAIL the  manufacturer, 'are you crazy..." These 3 irritate  liningsof the stomach and colon.

*To relieve gas, food combine correctly. Fermentation in stomach and gas up there is from not digesting protein that was eaten with sodas, sweets, starches. Use charcoal tablets (health food store item). Regular charcoal can cause        diarrhea;  the homeopathic remedy carbo veg is more gentle/3 pellets under the tongue as needed.

*Acidophilus (health food store item) to replenish the "friendly" bacteria in the gut. Many finer yogurts have up to four types of active bowel friendly bacillus.

*Aloe vera (health food store item) 3-4 ounces 3 times a day on an empty stomach to soothe the digestive track. if it doesn't bother you. If it does, and some people GET diaharrea from it,  1/4 oz seems ok  in Veg- juice/low sodium brand. Easy to grow your own, Bitter-ish but you throw it in celery/apple/ carrot juice, you won't notice it.

*Whenever possible, avoid the use of antibiotics, antacids, and laxatives which disturb the bacterial flora in your bowel.

*Take a B complex capsule of 50-100 mg 3X a day with meals to help absorb and digest foods.

*Take Kyolic (garlic) (health food store item) to aid in digestion and destroy toxins in the colon. liquid not best form.  Kyolic good brand/1x day tablet.

*Daily eat whole grain cereals, especially oat bran, flaxseed and psyllium seeds), but avoid wheat, which has GLUTEN and has an irritating effect on the colon. BIBLE BREAD seems to defuse the gluten. most of the world population is allergic to glutens, causing diarrhea.  devitalized grain form.   golden flax fresh ground is excellent source of nutrition.

*If you have diarrhea, take a hypoallergenic multivitamin daily.

*Take flaxseed freshly ground. Take primrose oil (health food item; follow label directions) to protect your intestinal lining

*Take proteolytic enyzmes, with high pancreatin and low HCL(health food store item) to aid in protein digestion and reduce inflammation.

*Take milk thistle (silymarin) to add in liver cleansing (health food item).

*Chew your food well and don't eat and watch TV or do work while eating.

*Avoid eating after dinner. Let your food digest before lying down.

*Practice deep breathing exercises to improve bowel function.

* Use a tbspoon liquid bleach in slosh of detergent, add a few cups of water and clean all sinks and basins where you wash vegies and fruits. Rinse well. Germs cling to many 'white-seeming' surfaces.

I wrote a friend, in her sixties, who had IBS bad, "what was the secret of how you stopped irritable bowel syndrome? Over a year you had it and you tried so many things.....and then slowly gained mastery over it. And then beat it."

SHE ANSWERED:
1. prayer
2. chi machine 2x daily for 15-20 min ea.
3. not focusing on the trouble
4. eating light foods soups, stews, soft grain dishes (like polenta or oatmeal), and cooked vegetables.
5. detoxing with  ginger tea. Bring water to a boil, grate tsp peeled ginger in, cover let brew. Strain into cup
6. warm aromatherapy baths.
7. tried not to let hubby irritate me. probably not fair to say that because he was very sympathetic but15 yrs with him could have laid the foundation for this nervous disorder. Who knows!
8. AVOID: Things that aggravate IBS include: refined oils, fruit juice and raw fruit, salad, artificial sweeteners (even small amounts as in sugar-free gum), alcohol, coffee and tobacco.

Working on the cure  kept my mind comforted to attempt to be kind to my body. My Chinese medical doctor/ acunpuncturist counseled me on at that time saying ' be nice to my body, massage it with lotion, talk to it, eat one protein egg a day, eat more protein, rest, be peaceful. she has always felt my life was too much stress here. I believe everything had to work itself out. at that time I went for chelation i.v. at alternative center maybe it helped. don't know. the whole time i didn't lose one pound. isn't that interesting?! I believe the rolfing awakened cellular memories that then purged throu the alimentary canal..digestion..colon...out spot out. Did these things then IBS stopped as fast as it started....like rain. An amazing venture.

I USED To have 15 bowel movements a day. I STILL have to be mindful when I'm traveling not to use too much Vit c.......as it causes diarrhea when you get into big doses. Also, not too much aloe juice.......diarrhea. sometimes i use to combine them........what a cramping nightmare that was!

FOR an IBS CURE, aloe juice is an important drink. when my friend who had it bad made make wet soups, at the end after soup cooled, I pour in a tsp of aloe juice per serving. Read about aloe juice, minerals, vitamins, aminos and trace elements/inexpensive for all people. for children. for the elderly, for pregnancy, so helpful.

ONE of course early takes out suspected aggravants. LIKE MILK, famous for causing diaharea. (You can't give the stuff to adult cats, you know, without ruining carpets!) Then, a month later, reintroduce that suspected food? MILK is famous for causing IBS right? Lactose? So switch to almond or soy but it must be CARRAGEENAN free soy milk. Check label to make sure they aren't thickening it with carrageen. Make your own almond, brown rice milk.

And TAKE folic acid! A pal wrote me: "I also wanted to let you know what I did for IBS. My divorce and stress left me a mess. It got to the point where I always had to find where the bathroom was at all times. I went to a compounder who does natural formulas. He has an instant cure without a doubt in his mind. I take a large dose of folic acid. He formulated 12.5 mg capsules for me to take twice a day. It's the equivalent of a whole bottle off the shelf. At any rate, it worked. I now only take one a day and don't even need that, but figure I need the folic acid anyway.

FOLIC acid is in leaves. But of course, you can't eat salad with IBS, right? Too much roughage, so either add green leaves to the carrot/ pear/ apple/ celery mix in your JUICER or go looking for this kind of folic product.
