GOOD AMBITION VS. BAD AMBITION
We unconsciously believe that the Gods of Olympus (or our planet's OLIGARCHS) have some power that ordinary mortals do not. Some Mojo. They can do BIGGER THINGS than we can, not necessarily more wonderful things than you and I can do but somehow they can create BIGGER universes and fill them with people and get people to do hard work. How in the HECK do they do it? I'm guessing that they must have a design, an idea and then some ambition. Fire in the Belly. We know that God stood in the void and said LET THERE BE LIGHT because the BIBLE tells us so. Then he said "Let there be Dark, Let there be oceans, animals. Mankind. Apple Tree, EDEN gardens full of flowering trees." He spoke into existence a series of very fine things. What CHUTZPAH he had. Hey, Is there something like too much ambition? Is ambition a healthy quality? Or, as a poet said, "AMBITION is the last refuge of failures."The poet was Oscar Wilde whose main ambition was pretty boys and great play openings. He had plenty of both. I believe Oscar's opinion refers to the code of the l9th century Gentleman. If you're ungracefully voraciously hungry for something, it means you're a real loser. Survival was so difficult in London at that time, and being a gentleman was so important, and if you were inner circle, then you were on VIEW full time in this tiny, insular community and you weren't supposed to be overheard talking about money, carriages, mansions, teeth gritted, especially since everyone around you was a servant who lived ten to a room! So on a higher level, was Oscar onto something or not? To me, this statement means if you're ambitious, you've lost the real secret of being a winner: simply loving what you do. AMBITION implies some OTHER future day has the goodies. An involved, focused worker or artist knows the goodies are right here and now. I have read a lot of biographies of successful, ambitious Capitalists (Kennedy family, Fords, Rockefellers, H.R.Luce of Time-Life but one impressed me in particular -- a self made multi millionaire named WILLIAM CASEY (book by Joseph Persico) who was a venture capitalist, investing in ideas. He made so much money he got REAGAN made president; they gave him the CIA as he was ex OSS. That is an important book on what parts of the brain, the man, make money. Another book I adore is CEO by Sandra Kurtzig. She started a biz in her garage, it made a few million first year but the big money was when she went public, got 422 Million.
What I'm saying is I've read scads of writers, oligarchs and writers, that's what/who I research) so I think I see why they did well and I think I spotted the need they all had to Take what's at hand, a good idea, a service or item and make an effort.
I saw what motivated them and how they trod the road of life and there discovered wealth and how they began to think like the Oligarchs do. The THINKING that creates the business is really the main thing to start on the path to being rich. SLAVES THINK LIKE SLAVES. They starve, whine and snivel, bemoan the master...think WHIP. GROVEL and plead.And stay angry all the time. FOCUSED ON THE WHIP.
OLIGARCHS also THINK WHIP but they're on the other end of it and find it easy to CRANK UP A TEAM, grind their minds together into one VENTURE. Read "ROCKEFELLER" by David HOROWITZ. Abe books has copies for a buck. THINK BIG. HE WAS A CLERK in a warehouse but he had a big thought. Hmmmm. grain on this river (mississippi) big moola. Transit of grain. Hmmm. Maybe me and my chum could have our own grain shipping company. BRAINSTORM up YOUR OWN GRAIN concepts: IF I WERE JOHN D ROCKEFELLER and stood in my JC PENNY shoes, but with that BRAIN focused on the mess around me that I need to FIX RIGHT NOW...or the useful elements, the seeds, the GRAIN around me, what would I USE that I have near me (things, ideas, merchandise, friends, tastes, passions, ie.my knowledge of the grain trade) to rent cargo boats & make a million? And don't make excuses, Oh I have no clothes, no plastic, oh I have to take care of my Mom, or my Dad or kids or X and Y and Z I have no TIME... START on the project even with all those current responsibilities. VOW to at least to entertain the thought at regular intervals.
Next, talk the CONCEPT over with like minds, vowing to each friend that you personally will do the most demanding part of the work. But wouldn't it be nice if you could all (DESCRIBE GOAL IN "CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS" TERMS) co-create this huge, profitable project? NOW is when you BRAINSTORM up a list.
Elaborate on those cash schemes you brainstorm up...to chums. They'll come in with you. LANGUAGING FOR POWER is about work vowing. You know -- speaking of castles, --- let me tell you how the first bean farmer rose from his muddy field to occupy a castle on yonder mountain? HE said to his other muddy chums 'hey these are the ugly dangers/ realities, the Goths come and impale us every so often, why not take our field stones and BUILD up on that mountain, creating a walled fort so tall and strong that we can keep them out, throw boiling water on them...When the Goths come, we go in there." He didn't exactly wield a whip, but his hand was on something that got the team of horses going, so he was certainly driving the wagon.
And that bean farmer, via the SPARK OF THE IDEA, got every villager to CO-OPERATE, do huge huge work carrying rocks and stacking them on a mountain top just to keep some GOTH out that maybe even would not show up but once a century. Do you get the picture yet? HOW LITTLE JOE bean FARMER became a KING thru a spark of an idea? And thusly became an aristocrat thenceforward... HIS SONS and grandsons got to visit the Pope in ROME, eat linguini, vacations the other bean farmers never would take. All from ONE little SPARK of a good idea.
Did he misappropriate? Did he lie? No. Did the good idea not save them all during Goth attacks? Yes. Did the good idea lead him to wear PURPLE while the rest wore rags. Yeah, maybe BOTH. Capitalism is like that. It's a stone fort we all build only some of us IDENTIFY with the leadership role a little more than the others and go overboard. Others like Bill Gates live in a simple home and put millions into foundations to end hunger.
So sliding gently into viewing ones passion for software and hardware as Bill did, is valid, and viewing oneself as a leader when you go into IBM and demand software rights is part of it. Or whatever his other crimes were. Get book or TV show "Pirates of Silicone Valley," Dead Zone star plays him.
Now, the motivations for your becoming a Gates with your passions, talents idea? Perhaps YOUR KIDS' safety? The village's safety? We have GOTHS these day, for sure. Big bad hairy Banksters. That's who we want to save our children from. That would be our MOTIVATORS. John D. Rockfeller was doing it for his mother whom he adored, who was very poor. He started at age 6 working to earn money for her, raising, selling turkeys. JOHN D'S CHILDHOOD IS HERE.
