HOW TO GET SSI, TOTAL DISABILITY

METHOD ONE: BE POOR - If you want to GET SSI, it is necessary that you NOT HAVE more than $2,000 in total assets, including cash. NO LIFE INSURANCE.--NO JEWELRY or expensive assets. They do not count furniture or clothing - as it is used and very little value. You can own any ONE CAR - it can be a Mercedes Benz or a Rolls Royce, as long as you only have one car in your name AND YOU USE IT TO DRIVE TO DOCTOR & OTHER MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS. Or SAY that you do as you're so so so disabled.

Do not tell them your house is given you by a child or relative. SAY YOU PAY RENT, the lease is in your name, as if someone helps you with food, rent, utilities anything (they do not look by the way, they take your word) the SS ADMIN will  count that 'donation' as actual income and lower your stipend..your grant, but bigtime!

METHOD TWO: BE CRAZY

earrings, tons of crazy things in purse including squirt
gun, all of which you put on desk looking for a
cigarette butt (found in street,) 'gotta match, sonny?
 
A friend told me this about SSI: "The way it works is, if the SSA decides that you're disabled, they give you a period of time (three years) to see if you can still work. During that time, you get benefits for any month that you're not working or that you work and make less than $980. After the three years are up, if you make more than that amount in any single month, the govt in effect cuts you off, and even if you don't work at all you don't get any SSDI. I owe the SSA about $15,000 for the benefits that they paid me the past three years for the months I worked. I actually tried to tell them I was working but their record-keeping is all screwed up.   SOme people feel that being on SSDI or AFDC or whatever is 'immoral' or that it saps your initiative. What's immoral is the lawyers! YEP. The disability lawyer I went to deliberately tried to make it look like my health was worse than it was and that I couldn't work, because, for every case they win, they get a 25% cut of any back benefits. THAT'S the part I said was immoral.

Another pal said to me "Anita, get Section 8 housing as you live in a ramshackle cottage on overgrown lot the city's always citing. Apply for this low cost rent rate, thru HUD - (*Housing and Urban Development). It can take up to 8 years or longer to get it, but you need to sign up immediately wherever they have open waiting lists to sign up. They have priorities, Veterans, Disabled, Single mothers with infants and (I think) seniors. Some are closed waiting lists with at least an 8 to 10 year waiting list. HUD has different criteria for the amount of money you can earn and get rental payment assistance - you pay only one third of your gross income in rent! A great deal - and once you get it do NOTHING to jeopardize it, or you lose it for life and have to repay any and all money they ever paid on rent for you. NOT NICE OF YOU to take advantage. With HUD and receiving Section 8, you can work and earn up to a certain amount, you need to ask them to mail you the information or go into your local office and request the GUIDELINES TO RECEIVE SECTION 8. They entail landlord making all funky plumbing, sinks, tubs, baths, kitchens PERFECT. He wouldn't do it so I couldn't do it. My landlord was 85 yrs old, charged me rents that were like the late 50s so I didnt see the point in forcing him. Better the ramshackle cottage I know than the posh, pure one I don't.

My pal said " If you have already signed up for Section 8, you need to keep all your contact information current. They send letters (only via mail) no verbal contacts to make sure their waiting lists are current almost every year. (!) It is your responsibility for them to be able to contact you at any time. If you have been on a waiting list for several years, and you are almost homeless and your rent responsibility is a huge burden, consider contacting your congressman and asking the interns (the congressional office) to intervene on your behalf for priority in getting Section 8.That little kick from an official is GOLD.

SO GOOGLE AROUND TO FIND THE HUD OFFICE in its CURRENT LOCATION. They move all the time. Assassins after them, you know. DUNNO WHY. THEY SOUND SO GOOD (SEE BELOW)

"Eligible Customers:
HUD contracts with housing authorities to provide Section 8 voucher
assistance to very low-income households, households already assisted under
the Housing Act of 1937 and households with incomes up to 80 percent of area
median that qualify to receive a voucher in connection with other HUD
programs. HUD determines median income levels for each area annually.

Eligible Activities:
A system of "portability" allows families to use the assistance outside the
boundaries of the PHA that originally admits a family. HUD pays the
administering agency an administration fee to cover costs of running the
program, including accepting and reviewing applications, recertifying
participants, and inspecting the rental units for quality. Vouchers could be
used for homeownership under Section 8(y), but this has not yet been
implemented."

I NOTED that when they calculated my income, they said the food and rent my daughter cut me in this cottage  was worth mega bucks, 240$ or something, ergo they were taking me down, considering that as income. So tell them that YOU PAY THE RENT! And it's 500$ or 700$ something like that. You are more likely to get better treatment, a better deal. So I shot myself in the foot with that one. Cuz I pay the whole rent. My baby girl is in NYC! I thought it was like welfare AFDC where if you pay a grand amonth rent, they say 'who's your daddy?' right? And go checking.

Not so with SSI/ Half a federal stipend and half parsed in by state of CALIFORNIA which is where the bad grass grows: Our 'Governator' cut us disabled seniors down twice, My disabled senior galpal who just had open heart surgery then spine surgery w. three imploded vertabrae, got spine shots or something confided: "Anita, I get $134.00, or did, have not picked up my mail in a few days - it's probably less with this week's demotion and yes, it is the governator - that a-hole. It used to be $228, then down to $204, then down to $189, now $134.  I tell you, he and the Republicans want to rid California of all seniors and low income.  I heard Washington State, they get over $300 a month for SSI.  WOW, PLUSH!"

I too need open heart surgery, valves all open, scarred from childhood strep throat. I have almost no heart beat, faint all the time, what little heartbeat there is has heavy atrial fibrillation. I stay glued with healthfoods, (boiled protein once a day, greens, lots of citrus here on trees, bible bread toasted for breakfast,) & regular garden work on good days. Bad days I am too faint. I was getting 330 but Ahnold took it down to 305, then down to $280. Twice he lowered it so it was increments every six mos. California, the GERMAN BEAR FLAG REPUBLIC. Fifty bucks off 330$ a month means one SIXTH of it was gone! In a bigtime inflationary period where bread doubled. The Nazi son of a gun. Thank Gawd he's gone. SECOND that we got Governor Moonbeam back, we had DENTISTRY aid back.  (Note, 1995, Schwazeneggar took dentistry from the poor. Moonbeam put it back for Med-i-Cal patients.) Now we have GAVIN WINSOME a big LIBERAL, born wealthy, has none of the anality of the German Governor who grew up with post-war INSUFFICIENCIES.
