ALTRUISM CAME FROM "SMART CELLS", and IS A DARWINIAN TACTIC!
Sociobiology tells us that altruism is ‘selected’ to maintain survival where genetic kinship is high. That means that the laws of survival favor animals, insects or even human groups that are altruistic whereas selfish groups (or perhaps unrelated, hodge podge groups like the modern city) die out. So if you ever wondered why Chinese replicate at that rate, or Muslims or Africans or Ghetto blacks or any group you don't favor, check the nice-nice factor. They may have a lot of love in their hearts. FOR THEIR GROUP.
Ferinstance, Japan, a country which won't allow foreign emigration has lowest birth rate, less than ZPG. Corporations over there have to inculcate HIVE MIND with cheerleaders, daily. See FILM "GUNG HO" hilarious comedy on that.
At the cellular level, reproduction occurs through replication and division. If a few cells are lost, little harm is done to the overall structure of information. Cells can afford to "sacrifice themselves" where the integrity of the organism is challenged, as in viral invasion. SO heroicism is part of nature. HEROIC people sacrifice themselves for the tribe and advances get made, wars get one and the cell goes on even though some soldier was killed by the stress. Ants and bees depend on altruism and self sacrifice because their level of kinship is very high. Ditto Monkeys.
At the human level, sexual reproduction is more random, directed by an even more random process of "falling in love" or simply talking a girl into "doing it". In the case of falling in love, from the western view, we romanticize a couple who marries and makes it work against all odds, even the society that might frown on the logic of their marriage.Such a romantic endeavor is self-sacrificial on the part of each mate (who sacrifices autonomy and privacy) and does so for the good of society and offspring. The choice is made or is more dependent on individual biological needs than on the genetic preservation of society of course. "We came together cuz it felt good!"
Because of such biological urges, the evolution of social structure revolves around the nuclear family. In the US, the nuclear family became the model, of the ideal model of government for individuals.
Falling in love, romantic love, nuclear family ideals, these are not reproductive values consistent with altruism or "the greatest good for the greatest number".
Yet socially, in the US, altruism for a short period of time became dominant in our society. The issue still rages behind "liberal" and" conservative" ideologies.
However, if viewed closely, both liberal and conservative goals aim at some form of collectivism, which does not mention the reproductive process of family, except to mention tax breaks for families with children.
Large families with tax breaks are still part of a larger corporate system that demands sacrifice to basic American ideals couched in phrases like "free enterprise" or "fairness and justice".
It occurred to me that the breakdown of the family and the breakdown of the moral authority of the nuclear family are due to western nations operating under two opposing assumptions about our reproductive ideals.
As I mentioned before, altruism is highest where reproduction is "cellular" in nature. Altruism is least where reproductive policies are random and dependent on individual preference.
The two forms, cellular reproduction and sexual reproduction at the human level, are reflected in the mechanical/reproductive process versus the nuclear family ideal.
For example, since the industrial revolution to fairly recent times, social value was increasingly geared to mechanical reproduction, or mass production on an assembly line basis. This form of reproduction, however, is more cellular in nature. Exact replication over and over again at ever-higher rates to maintain efficiency.
As such, the value of cellular reproduction, represented by the emergence of the industrial revolution, overrides the values of sexual reproduction and the nuclear family.
The necessity of altruism to support the growth of mass production is greater than the necessities of independence that maintained the value of the nuclear family.
That the corporate structure of cellular reproduction is superior is evidenced by the fact that corporate values give lip service to the sanctity of marriage and family through tax incentives, yet continually create survival pressures that drive families apart.
If this viewpoint is true, we are not talking about the erosion of freely chosen values, but one set of values constantly working at odds with a completely different and dominant set of values.
One form of reproduction versus another form of reproduction.
Add to this pressure a centralized banking system that fuels corporate values, and you have a controlled information system that has less and less dependence on family values as an independent means of reproduction.
I am wondering what effects these opposing forms of reproduction have on such issues as abortion rights, euthanasia, and human rights in general.
The trend seems to be that the more liberal, anti-business orientation favors abortion rights, while the conservative, business oriented, corporate culture wishes to dissolve all individual rights for abortion.
Is there a connection in this reasoning? Do our chief debates on moral issues center around two opposing forms of reproduction? The Xenophobes, Republicans, GOP, neo Nazi, anti-immigration Arizona groups that shot a liberal congresswoman to death? The Teabaggers too, all those right wingers VERSUS the altruistic, HIPPIE, LAUREL CANYON, live simply and organically anti war activists? Have we got the dividing line?
If so, which form do we choose and what constellation of values surround that form?
